With more than fifty categories of skis available, an abundance of magazine and internet reviews, and as many opinions as there are sources of information, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with choosing skis. How can you sift through the options to find what’s right for you? Our crew helps to simplify the process.
These are the key factors to consider:
Where do you plan to ski most of the time?
Groomed runs
Powder
Hard-packed surfaces (not including the parking lot)
The crud (we’re not asking where you dream of skiing, but where you think you’ll actually ski most often)
How would you describe your technical ability? This has less to do with what you can get down (e.g., black diamonds or blue squares), and more to do with your form and how aggressive you are. For example:
Do you have incredible form but you ski runs at your own pace?
Is your form severely lacking but you try to conquer everything you go down with a vengeance?
Your dimensions are a key consideration, particularly your weight. Skis have generally gotten much shorter, as ski technology has advanced considerably. Height doesn’t matter much, unless you’re really short or really tall. As a professional skier we know said, “The ski doesn’t know how tall you are, but it sure knows how much you weigh.”
Some may say they want a ski that navigates moguls (bumps) well. Most manufacturer reps would say that it isn’t the car but the driver that matters, which is why they don’t really make mogul skis anymore. A lot has changed.
The more we know about you and your ability, the better we can advise you. We have extensive knowledge about gear, and know what questions to ask to make the most appropriate suggestions. Regardless of your ability, size, preferences, and where you typically find yourself skiing, there’s something for everyone, and we can help you find what’s right for you.
