Grant's Journal

Friday, April 18
Opening day is approaching. The official opening of most of lakes and many of the surrounding mountain streams of the Sierras will be available to fish starting April 26th. At Doc's we will be caring all the flies, tackle and even float tubes that you will need to have a great day on the water. Tom Lyle, a lake Crowley guide is supplying us with his respected midge patterns and streamers that the fish just can't say no to. So dig through your gear and stop by to pick up everything else you need for your upcoming trip. Come bye and test cast any of the rods we have or just come and introduce yourself.

Tight Lines.

Thursday, April 10
It's low tide and I don't have a much time to fish, so I went down to the beach just up from the Johnathan Club north of the Santa Monica pier before work. With very little wind and low swell I walked out onto a sand bank and started casting an Orvis Clearwater nine-foot, eight-weight with a T 8 line from Rio. I worked the pockets were deep water meets shallow and slowly retrieved my bright red surf rat fly tied by local guide Shane Chung fishing for surf perch or anything else that will bite. After working the sand bar for about 15 minutes I see a small school of Leopard Sharks move past me. I gauge the direction the group is swimming in and cast out and let my fly settle. With a few slow, short retrieves the line goes tight, I set the hook and I have a very lively leopard shark at the end of my line heading for deeper water. Leopard sharks are great fun to catch off the beach on a fly and they don't get very big, plus you don't have to worry about one attacking you either! They feed on crabs and other small fish, so even when a school swims by you, have a cast at them, and hold on!

Best wishes and tight lines.
